North Nottawa Street in Sturgis is expected to be fully accessible again beginning Monday, September 30, according to City Manager Andrew Kuk.

A sanitary sewer project began Tuesday, September 3, Watershed Voice previously reported. It involved closing North Nottawa Street from Main to Hatch Streets. During this time, the Department of Public Services replaced water main valves on North Nottawa Street between Chicago and Hatch Streets.

“I think for most people, the big impact will be getting Nottawa reopened,” Kuk said during Wednesday’s Sturgis City Commission meeting. “That should be happening Monday.”

Detours resulted in new routes for people including Commissioner Linda Harrington. Passing by 309 N. Prospect St., she noticed a “MadCheetah.”

Based in Holland, MadCheetah will open its new warehouse in Sturgis next week. The retail company currently sells online on eBay, Amazon, and bid.madcheetah.com.

MadCheetah will have its first auction Thursday, October 3, followed by its first open day for pickups on Saturday, October 5.

“It’s a retail establishment that is mostly going to be shipping and catalog orders and what not,” Commissioner Marvin Smith said. “Little knickknacks, tchotchkes, and stuff like that there.”

Commissioners voted unanimously on four items Wednesday:

  • Approving a proposal from Verdantas for design of the Stateline substation in the amount of $328,000. The project includes the construction of a new electrical substation to reduce loading on the City of Sturgis’ Southeast Substation.
  • Giving Kuk the authority to sign all necessary documents related to grant negotiations with the Department of Energy. The City of Sturgis has requested a $1.35 million grant for the $4.5 million project of embankment rehabilitation at the city’s hydroelectric dam.
  • Adoption of the Resolution to Control Municipal Health Care Costs. The City of Sturgis is continuing its tradition of opting out of an 80/20% cost sharing arrangement. If it opted in, the City of Sturgis would pay 80% of the total annual costs of all local government employees’ medical benefit plans.
  • Approving budget amendments for Fiscal Year 2023-2024.

  • Mayor Frank Perez was absent from Wednesday’s meeting.
  • The next Sturgis City Commission meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, October 8.
