Mechanical issues cause motorcycle crash, sends two to the hospital

Two people were taken to the hospital after a motorcycle crash in Wayne Township, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday evening.

Robert Rudd, 54, of Decatur, and his passenger Melisa Menzies, 44, of Elkhart, were traveling westbound on Marcellus Highway near Griffis Road when the motorcycle had mechanical issues. Rudd lost control and crashed into the eastbound lane.

Due to injuries sustained in the crash, Rudd was transported via MED Flight to South Bend Memorial Hospital. Menzies was transported to the same hospital by VBEMS Ambulance.

The sheriff’s office said Rudd and Menzies were not wearing helmets, and alcohol nor drugs are considered factors in the crash.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by Dowagiac Fire, Wayne Fire, Marcellus Ambulance, VBEMS, and MED Flight.
