A Niles man was transported to the hospital Tuesday after the vehicle he was driving struck several trees in Cass County’s Jefferson Township.

According to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened around 7:50 a.m. Tuesday on Pine Lake Street east of Dailey Road in Jefferson Township. The man, 33 year-old Kieffer Thornton, was traveling east on Pine Lake Street when he lost control of his vehicle, running off the roadway and striking several trees. Thornton was transported to South Bend Memorial Hospital for his injuries.

The driver was not wearing a seat belt, and alcohol and drugs do not appear to have been factors in the crash. Deputies were assisted at the scene by SMACAS ambulance and Edwardsburg Fire Department.
