One injured in three-vehicle Porter Township crash

One driver, a man from Elkhart, Indiana, was transported by ambulance from the scene of a three-vehicle crash Monday. The incident took place at approximately 3:59 p.m. at the intersection of Union Road and Mason Street, Porter Township in Cass County.

Investigation by sheriff’s deputies shows that the Elkhart man was driving a vehicle traveling westbound on Mason Street. He failed to stop at a stop sign, crashing into another Elkhart man, Paul Zinich, 60. Zinich was traveling southbound on Union Road.

“Zinich’s vehicle then struck another vehicle who was stopped at the stop sign on the west side of Mason Street,” Cass County Sheriff Richard J. Behnke stated. “That vehicle was driven by Bill Scarberry, 52, Jones, Michigan.”

Both Zinich and Scarberry were treated and released from the scene. The first driver, who has not been identified, was transported by ambulance to Elkhart General Hospital.

“It is unknown if alcohol was a factor in the crash. All occupants were wearing a seatbelt at the time of crash. This crash remains under investigation,” Behnke stated.

Assisting the sheriff’s office on scene were Porter Fire and SEPSA Ambulance.
