The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has unveiled a $15.3 billion plan to improve the roadways, bridges, public transit, rail, and aeronautics of the state over the next five years.

The 2025-2029 Five-Year Transportation Program (5YTP) will help MDOT better manage its long-term goals and strategies for asset management by connecting state transportation projects with performance measures and budget targets.

MDOT invites the public to check out its website for more information on the 5YTP, a summary video, and options on how to provide comments. Public input on the draft document will be open from Friday, August 2 through Tuesday, September 3.

The plan includes $10.6 billion for repairing and rebuilding MDOT roads and bridges, $3.6 billion for the Public Transportation Program, and $1 billion for the Aeronautics Program.

A total of $15.3 billion in anticipated state and federally funded investments are included in the proposal. Of the total funding, $10.6 billion will be allocated to the Highway Program to enhance the safety and resilience of the roadways and bridges, $3.6 billion will be spent on the Public Transportation Program to improve access to and quality of public transportation services, and $1 billion will be dedicated to the Aeronautics Program to support federal, state, and local aviation programs.

The state expects MDOT to submit the 5YTP to the Michigan Legislature on March 1, 2025, which is required by law. The legislative approval of the plan will assist in the development of the biennial State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) and aid in the preparation of the annual state budget.
