Sturgis businesses targeted in phone scam

The City of Sturgis responded Wednesday to a new telephone scam targeting local businesses.

People are posing as electric company workers and threatening to shut off electricity if they don’t pay immediately over the phone, the Sturgis Department of Public Safety wrote on Facebook. As of Wednesday, the calls appear to have only been to businesses, not residences. Still, overall vigilance is important.

The City of Sturgis will never call residents demanding immediate payment over the phone. If you receive such a call, you are encouraged to hang up and call your company back at its normal number.
