Branch Hillsdale St. Joseph Community Health Agency offers expanded vaccination options

The Branch Hillsdale St. Joseph Community Health Agency (BHSJ CHA) reminds residents that they can get their COVID-19, flu, RSV, pneumonia, and pertussis vaccines at all of its offices.

The agency is now accepting many Medicare Advantage, Medicare Part B, and Part D plans, making it easier for residents to access these important immunizations.

Vaccines are recommended for individuals of all ages, with specific recommendations varying by age group. The RSV vaccine is particularly crucial for infants from birth to 6 months old, while pertussis and pneumonia vaccines are recommended for infants starting at 2 months. Both the flu and COVID vaccines are recommended for individuals aged 6 months and older, with a high-dose influenza vaccine available for those aged 65 and over.

“While no vaccine is 100% effective at preventing illness, vaccines decrease the potential for serious illness, hospitalization, and death. The current flu and COVID-19 vaccines have been designed to provide protection from the currently circulating variants.” Medical Director Dr. Karen Luparello said.

Residents are encouraged to consult their healthcare providers to determine which vaccines are right for them and their families, as well as to discuss the possibility of receiving multiple vaccines at the same appointment.

Due to changes in COVID vaccine coverage, individuals are advised to contact their insurance carriers to confirm coverage and determine the most cost-effective location for their vaccination. Those uninsured or facing co-pays are encouraged to contact their local health department office to schedule an appointment.

BHSJ CHA offers several programs that may provide free vaccinations, including the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program for individuals aged 18 and under, and the Adult Vaccine Program (MI-AVP) for those 19 and older. These programs assist families and individuals who lack insurance or whose insurance does not cover certain immunizations.

Currently, BHSJ CHA offers both Pfizer and Moderna COVID vaccines. However, due to limited supply, residents are encouraged to call their local office to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. In St. Joseph County, the office can be reached at 269-273-2161 ext. 298.
