City Manager Joe Bippus said the funding will come from the city’s hazardous structures line item, which currently has available resources. Commissioners approved a spending cap of $15,000 for the acquisitions.
The lone action item currently on the docket is the proposed purchase of real estate in the form of three tax delinquent properties up for auction by the county.
The city awarded a contract for its Wellfield Generator Replacement project to a Kalamazoo-based firm despite receiving a lower bid. Brussee/Brady Construction, based in Three Rivers, submitted a bid of $1.285 million — $111,100 lower than the selected bid from LD Docsa Associates. But city staff said they recommended the higher bid due to LD Docsa’s experience with similar infrastructure projects and familiarity with public utility systems.
The city will collect approximately $4.6 million in property taxes, while the remainder of general fund revenue will come from state-shared revenue, service fees, and grants.
A key item on the agenda will be the proposed FY26 User Fee Ordinance update, which outlines new or adjusted fees across various city services.
Commissioner Christopher Abel introduced the motion, citing scheduling conflicts and travel challenges associated with the current 5 p.m. start time.
Both meetings will start at 5 p.m. at their respective locations.
Tonight the commission will discuss whether to apply for state grant funding to investigate the cost and logistics of removing the Portage Plant dam.
Commissioners approved the use of $170,000 to purchase parcels adjacent to the airport. The airport will continue to have clear airspace, according to Director of Public Services Amy Roth's report.
Commissioners including Carolyn McNary, Steven Haigh, and their peers are expected to act tonight on business including acquiring parcels near the airport.
