“A healthy pet is a happy pet,” said Ron Butts, Cass County’s animal control director.
“Rabies vaccinations aren’t just a good idea – they’re required by Michigan law for all dogs over four months old, and they need to be licensed in the county they live in.”
Rabies vaccines will be provided by Bergman Small Animal P.C. with both one-year and three-year shots available. Combination vaccines that cover Distemper, Parvo, Parainfluenza, and Hepatitis will also be offered. Each shot costs $25, cash only.
While walk-ins are welcome, Butts recommends calling ahead to pre-register at (269) 445-3701 so the clinic can make sure enough doses are available.
Rabies is a deadly virus that can spread from animals to people, and it’s almost always fatal once symptoms appear. While human cases are rare in the United States, rabies still kill thousands of people globally each year. In the U.S., the virus is most commonly found in wildlife but unvaccinated pets can be exposed and are at risk if bitten.
“Getting your pet vaccinated is one of the easiest ways to protect anyone,” Butts said. “It’s affordable, it’s fast, and it’s the law.”
