Directed by Stacey Jaeger, a production stage manager at the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre, the show is based on the 1989 film of the same name. The story follows Veronica Sawyer, a high school misfit who finds herself caught between the ruthless clique of the three Heathers and her mysterious new boyfriend, J.D., whose idea of justice takes a deadly turn.
Jaeger, who has previously performed at TRCP in The Frogs, Julius Caesar and The Drowsy Chaperone, leads a diverse cast featuring TRCP veterans, first-time performers and talent from surrounding communities.
The cast includes:
- Elisa Quigley, making her TRCP debut while balancing work at a sports massage office, and studying to obtain a master’s in psychology.
- Jonas Xavier (he/they), joining the TRCP stage for the first time, with past experience both on stage and behind the tech booth.
- Katie Ault (she/her), returning to TRCP as dance captain and ensemble member after recently playing Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing.
- Victoria Smith (she/her), taking on the role of Heather McNamara. Smith is a returning TRCP performer and soon-to-be Western Michigan University biochemistry student.
- Jonathan Talmadge (he/him), portraying Ram’s Dad and Big Bud Dean. Talmadge holds a theatre degree from Cal State Fullerton and has over 70 acting credits.
- Aaron Smith (he/him), stepping into speaking and singing roles after debuting in Jesus Christ Superstar.
- Nicole Weber (she/her), making her TRCP debut and returning to the stage after an eight-year hiatus.
- Logann Chrisman (she/they), appearing in their first-ever stage production after years in pit orchestras.
- Kate Wilen (she/they), a seasoned performer with credits including Be More Chill and Into the Woods.
- Sophie Niec-Clapp (she/her), playing Ms. Fleming in her second TRCP production.
- Kristine Schomisch, a local theatre regular returning after recent roles across the region.
- River Jackson, marking their eighth stage production and first with TRCP.
The musical blends biting satire with catchy pop-rock numbers and explores the dark side of high school hierarchies, teen angst and identity. While laced with humor, the show also tackles serious issues, and is recommended for mature audiences.
