Letter to the Editor: Not Left, Not Right. Together.

Layne Deuel of Lockport Township writes, “I humbly ask that all of us stand up to ICE and demand immediate, tangible change to this armed force. By speaking out, it does not make you less conservative or more liberal, it makes you truly American. The rebellious spirit to stand up to the wolf at the door is something that has been instilled in all of us. We cannot let that fire burn out now. We must stand together and push for change immediately. As Americans, we cannot fail the spirit of Americans before us or those who come after us.”

To the Editor:

Like many people, I awoke on an extremely cold January morning in Michigan to learn that ICE had killed an innocent civilian in Minneapolis. Unfortunately, as with so many other incidents, we witnessed this killing through the lens of a civilian’s cell phone recording, one that captured the extreme aggressiveness masked ICE agents continue to display across this nation.

Little to my surprise, our current administration quickly labeled Alex Pretti as a domestic terrorist and attempted to weave a narrative that he was a threat to their agents and that, by exercising his Second Amendment right to carry a firearm, he was worthy of being killed. We are being told by members of this administration that our own eyes and ears are betraying us, when our own eyes are witnessing the rapid decomposition of everything that makes us America. Abducting children in broad daylight and using them as bait? This isn’t the America that so many have fought and died for.

ICE continues to target immigrants and U.S. citizens based on the color of their skin. By using blatant racism and hatred, this will never make us “great again.” What makes America great is the melting pot this country has long been.

If you haven’t already, please contact your Representatives and Senators and demand this change. We cannot let the names of Alex Pretti and Renee Good go in vain.

In solidarity,
