Three Rivers Promise has raised more than $1 million toward its goal of creating a long-term scholarship endowment for graduates of Three Rivers High School.

The organization is in the initial phase of a community fundraising campaign aimed at building a self-sustaining fund to support tuition assistance for eligible graduates.

Under the organization’s plan, scholarship applications and awards would begin once the fund reaches $3 million. The long-term goal is to establish an endowment capable of supporting tuition assistance for all qualifying students.

Scholarship structure

The Three Rivers Promise scholarship program is intended to reduce financial barriers to post-secondary education.

According to program guidelines:

  • Eligibility: Scholarships would be available to Three Rivers High School graduates who attended Three Rivers Community Schools for the four consecutive years prior to graduation.
  • Coverage: Awards would help cover up to four years of in-state tuition and mandatory fees at approved Michigan colleges and vocational or technical training programs, after federal and state grant aid is applied.
  • Sliding scale: The program uses a sliding scale designed to provide the maximum benefit permitted by the endowment to students who remain enrolled in the district through graduation.

Community support

Organizers attribute the fundraising milestone to contributions from local families, businesses and community organizations.

Support has included:

  • Individual and family donations
  • Corporate pledges, including a $50,000 pledge and a $25,000 matching challenge from Kadant Johnson
  • Community fundraising events such as the annual Run for the Future and a community fish fry
  • Donations from civic organizations, including the Three Rivers Woman’s Club

The organization plans to launch a capital campaign in the coming year.
