The Southwest Michigan Journalism Collaborative (SWMJC) will host “Women in Media: Behind the Headlines” on April 16 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Epic Center in downtown Kalamazoo.
The free event, which is open to the public, will feature a panel of local women working in journalism and media. Space is limited, and RSVPs are recommended.
Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions and connect with panelists, including Kristen Aguirre, independent journalist; Sue Ellen Christian, professor at Western Michigan University’s School of Communication; Sehvilla Mann, news director at WMUK Public Radio; Kristie May, managing editor at NowKalamazoo; Aya Miller, reporter at MLive/Kalamazoo Gazette; and Theresa Coty O’Neil, managing editor at Second Wave Media. Marie Lee, editor and publisher of Encore Magazine, will moderate the discussion.
“The landscape for women in media is ever-changing, but some challenges remain — from pay disparities to slower career advancement,” said Melinda Clynes, SWMJC project manager and editor. “At the same time, women bring essential perspectives to journalism, including a deep understanding of their communities and the ability to challenge stereotypes.”
Complimentary refreshments will be provided. Beer and wine will be available for purchase.
The event will take place at the Epic Center, 359 S. Kalamazoo Mall. Parking is available in the Epic Center parking garage, accessible from westbound Park Street and eastbound Lovell Street.
