St. Joseph County United Way launches capital campaign for new facility

On June 6, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer requested a presidential disaster declaration for St. Joseph County. As of June 18, that request was pending. If there is a presidential declaration, individual assistance could become available, according to St. Joseph County Emergency Services Director Erin Goff.
A community event on suicide prevention will be held on Saturday, May 6 at Rouch World (63322 M-66) in Sturgis beginning at 11 a.m. Organized by the United Way and presented by the St. Joseph County Suicide Prevention Task Force, #BeHereTomorrow will feature keynote speaker Kevin Hines along with hayrides, bounce houses, food trucks, and resource tables.
2-1-1 is a free, nation-wide three digit phone number anyone can call to access health and human service assistance from within their community. The confidential service is available 24/7, and connects callers with a trained specialist who will help locate appropriate services which could include food banks, homeless shelters, mental health support, and more.
For most of the population in St. Joseph County a dry and warm home is the solution to combating inclement weather. However, a large number of unhoused people in this community are being left out in the cold. The City of Sturgis is working on its own solution, potentially creating a blueprint the City of Three Rivers could also implement.
