Whether it’s traveling in groups or having reflective tape on their costumes, children can have a safe Halloween, the agency says.

The Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph County Community Health Agency has some tips to ensure a safe Halloween:

• Stay on sidewalks or the far edge of the road facing traffic.

• Look both ways before crossing the street and use crosswalks.

• Attach reflective tape to costumes and treat bags to increase visibility at night.

* Travel in groups: Children should never be allowed to walk alone on Halloween. Always ensure they are accompanied by a responsible adult in a large group.

Officials also remind drivers to exercise extra caution on Halloween night, driving slowly and being alert to increased pedestrian activity. They also advise against distracted driving and urge drivers to remain vigilant for children who may be darting out into the street.

Additionally, there are a variety of ways for pet owners to be responsible this Halloween.
