Michigan Reconnect offers tuition-free associate degrees or skills certificates
“With the clock ticking, we’re urging adults between the ages of 21 and 24 to take advantage of Michigan Reconnect before the December 31 deadline,” said Dr. Beverly Walker-Griffea, director of MiLEAP.

The Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential (MiLEAP) is urging Michiganders ages 21-24 to apply for the Michigan Reconnect program before the December 31 deadline. The program offers tuition-free associate degrees or skills certificates at Michigan community or Tribal colleges.
Michigan Reconnect, typically available to adults aged 25 and older, was temporarily expanded to include younger adults. “With the clock ticking, we’re urging adults between the ages of 21 and 24 to take advantage of Michigan Reconnect before the December 31 deadline,” said Dr. Beverly Walker-Griffea, director of MiLEAP.
The program covers tuition costs, including for out-of-district community colleges up to the in-district rate. Students also receive dedicated Navigators to help them with the college application process, career goals, and program selection.
The Michigan Reconnect Navigator team hosts online drop-in office hours every Tuesday from 12-2 p.m. and Thursday from 5-7 p.m. to offer one-on-one support. During these sessions, students can ask questions about the program and receive help with completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Over 30,000 applicants have been accepted through the temporary expansion. The program has helped students like Valerie Gilbert, who was able to return to college after delaying her education. Jeremy Horton, another student, praised the program’s ease of application and the positive impact it has had on his life.
To be eligible, 21-24 year olds must apply for the Michigan Reconnect Scholarship by December 31, 2024, apply to a Michigan community or tribal college, file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and enroll in classes by summer 2025. Currently enrolled students should also apply for the scholarship by the deadline and contact their financial aid office for further information.
