Meeting primer: Three Rivers City Commission
Commissioners are scheduled to hold two public hearings concerning delinquent accounts. If approved, both sets of charges would be added to the December 2025 tax roll for collection.
The Three Rives City Commission will meet Tuesday, September 16 at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 333 West Michigan Avenue and hold public hearings for utility delinquent accounts and discuss property sales.
Commissioners are scheduled to hold two public hearings concerning delinquent accounts. The first deals with unpaid utility bills totaling just under $6,900, while the second concerns more than $7,900 in outstanding general accounts receivable. If approved, both sets of charges would be added to the December 2025 tax roll for collection.
The agenda also features two proposed property sales. The commission will consider final approval for the $5,000 sale of the vacant lot at 429 Fourth Avenue to AHI Group, LLC, which plans to use the site for an infill housing project. In a separate matter, the city has received an offer from local resident James Metty to purchase two vacant lots, one at 407 S. Main St. and another at 208 E. Michigan Ave. Metty, who has proposed opening a used car dealership on the South Main property, has offered to buy both lots for $1 and cover closing costs.
Other items
In addition to those items, commissioners will review financial reports, including invoices and a check register that together account for more than $1 million in city expenses. They will also consider board and committee minutes from earlier this summer, including downtown development and promotions meetings.
The meeting is open to the public and will begin at 6 p.m.

Michigan lawmaker explores changes to public notice rules, raising transparency concerns
Municipalities pay newspapers to publish these notices, with costs varying based on the number and length of postings.
According to recent Three Rivers City Commission agenda packets, the city paid $740 to the Three Rivers Commercial-News for fiscal year 2026 public notices. A separate payment of $290 for the same category was recorded February 13.
If lawmakers pursue changes, they could alter where and how notices are published, potentially shifting some requirements away from newspapers. However, state Rep. Sarah Lightner (R-Springport) has said she is not seeking to eliminate public notice requirements altogether.
