Portage switching to postcard-sized utility bills
This change aims to conserve paper, reduce waste, and promote paperless billing options. The city estimates that this switch will also save money on utility billing expenses.

The City of Portage is taking steps to reduce its environmental impact and streamline its billing process by transitioning to a smaller, postcard-sized format for utility bills. Starting in January 2025, residents will receive their utility bills on 4” x 6” double-sided postcards instead of the traditional full-sheet format.
This change aims to conserve paper, reduce waste, and promote paperless billing options. The city estimates that this switch will also save money on utility billing expenses.
The back of residents’ next quarterly bill displays an example of the new postcard format.
The City of Portage encourages residents to enroll in paperless billing or utilize the Pay-by-Text option as part of this initiative. Customers can also sign up for auto pay with a checking or savings account, which is also free, but a $3.95 fee applies for using a credit or debit card.
To enroll in these options, residents can visit portagemi.gov, select the “Bill Pay” icon, and then click on “Register or Pay Water/Sewer Bill.” They can then register or sign into their utility account and select Paperless Billing, Pay-by-Text, or AutoPay.
The City emphasizes that the Treasury Office and its third-party vendor staff cannot access bank account information. Residents can still make payments by mail, through the 24-hour drop box, or in person at no additional fee for check, cash, or money order payments.
