With excessive heat expected next week ahead of the holiday weekend, here’s where and how to beat the heat.

As temperatures climb across Southwest Michigan, residents looking to escape the heat have several options throughout Kalamazoo, St. Joseph and Cass counties.

The following locations include designated cooling centers as well as public buildings and community spaces that offer air-conditioned refuge during periods of extreme heat. Hours and availability may change, especially during weather emergencies, so residents are encouraged to call ahead when possible.

Heat Safety Tips

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends:

  • Drink plenty of water, even if you do not feel thirsty.
  • Avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest hours of the day.
  • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Never leave children, older adults or pets in a parked vehicle.
  • Check on neighbors, relatives and others who may be vulnerable to heat-related illness.
  • Seek air-conditioned spaces if temperatures become dangerous.
