Sturgis man killed in single-vehicle crash in Burr Oak Township

A 20-year-old male passenger, who was pronounced dead at the scene, has been identified by authorities. The driver, also a 20-year-old male, sustained critical injuries and was airlifted to a nearby hospital where he remains in critical but stable condition.

The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that occurred early Sunday morning, June 29, near the intersection of Lafayette Road and Big Hill Road in Burr Oak Township.

Deputies were dispatched to the scene at approximately 6:25 a.m., where they discovered a severely damaged vehicle off the roadway with two occupants inside.

A 20-year-old male passenger, identified as Edgar Eduardo Hernandez-Alcantar of Sturgis, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, also a 20-year-old male, sustained critical injuries and was airlifted to a nearby hospital. As of the latest update, he remains in critical but stable condition. His identity is being withheld pending the outcome of the investigation.

Preliminary findings suggest that alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the crash but that has yet to be officially determined.

In a statement, the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office extended its condolences. “Our prayers and support are with the family of Mr. Hernandez-Alcantar during this difficult time.”
