Michigan AG warns shoppers about holiday return policies
“Return policies vary greatly from store to store, but almost all impose a time limit on returns,” Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is reminding holiday shoppers about her consumer alert on Avoiding Unhappy Returns as the return season gets underway. Nessel stresses the importance of understanding store return policies before making purchases to avoid potential surprises.
“Return policies vary greatly from store to store, but almost all impose a time limit on returns,” Nessel said. She advises consumers who plan on returning gifts to act promptly and review the store’s return policy before heading out.
In-store shoppers can find return policies at the cash register or in the customer service area, or by asking a store clerk. Online shoppers should check the store’s website for return information, including details on how to return items.
If the information is unavailable online, Nessel advises exercising caution and contacting the store directly for the return policy in writing. Be sure to print and retain the return information (along with all receipts, packing slips, and other documentation).
Consumers facing refused returns should escalate the issue to the store manager. If the store refuses to return defective or misrepresented items, or fails to honor its stated return policy, consumers can file a complaint. Nessel suggests contacting the credit card company to dispute the charges if the purchase was made by credit card.
