Candlelight vigil to honor victims of domestic violence set for October 21 in Sturgis
The event, themed “Shine a Light on Domestic Violence,” aims to raise awareness, foster community support, and honor those who have lost their lives or been impacted by domestic violence in St. Joseph and Cass counties.
Community members are invited to join in lighting candles in remembrance of victims and in solidarity with survivors and their families.
Domestic and Sexual Abuse Services (DASAS), in partnership with the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office and Sturgis Public Schools, will host its annual Domestic Violence Candlelight Vigil on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Sturgis High School’s Trojan Field, located at 216 Vinewood Ave.
In the event of inclement weather, the vigil will move indoors to the school’s auxiliary gym.
The event, themed “Shine a Light on Domestic Violence,” aims to raise awareness, foster community support, and honor those who have lost their lives or been impacted by domestic violence in St. Joseph and Cass counties. “Each year, thousands of lives are cut short by domestic violence, and countless others are forever changed,” said Michelle Baker, a member of the DASAS board. “This vigil is a time for reflection, unity, and recommitment to ending the cycle of abuse in our communities.”
Organizers hope the evening will serve not only as a memorial but also as a call to action, encouraging residents to speak out, support survivors, and promote prevention efforts throughout southwest Michigan.

Sturgis City Commission finalizes recycling contract, approves fire truck purchase amid heated public comment on homelessness
A local laundromat owner, Alvie Wall, told commissioners he has dealt with repeated vandalism and theft and said he feels the city has failed to address the issue.
“I know you’re sympathetic to the homeless. You feel bad because they’re homeless,” Wall said. “They choose to be homeless. Big deal. That’s their deal. Be homeless all you want, but stop vandalizing my stuff.”

Commissioners are expected to finalize a months-long debate over whether to continue curbside recycling in the city. During the meeting, the commission will consider approval of an exclusive franchise agreement with Borden Waste-Away Service LLC, the city’s current recycling provider.
